INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT)
I use Interactive Whiteboards to present YouTube videos and presentations as well as to create and use interactive activities or manipulatives with the whole class.
A lesson on Fiji as part of a Grade 6 unit on Cultures was introduced with a presentation on the Interactive Whiteboard. The students watched a YouTube video on creating Tapa before creating their own using real banana leaves.

'A highlight of her teaching round was her ability to incorporate technology such as our IWB into her lessons to engage the students.'

In 2012 I attended a 'Quick Start to SMART Board' training session at Deakin University. The knowledge and skills gained from this session have allowed me to create manipulatives and interactive activities that can be used by a whole class, small groups or individually. The 'Fruit Market' is a virtual shopping experience designed for Grade 3/4 students.

Jumping Kangaroos
In a Grade 6 classroom I implemented a 'Working Mathematically' activity from Maths300 called Jumping Kangaroos. A challenge was given to the class to find the minimum number of moves it would take for 'the kangaroos to swap places given that: only one kangaroo can move at a time AND it must either hop into an adjacent vacant place OR jump over an on-coming kangaroo into a vacant place' (Maths300 2010). The above manipulative was created simply in Microsoft Word. The students worked as a whole group using the manipulative as a whole class before working in pairs to record the patterns and find the lowest number of moves. The class then came together as a group again to test their ideas on the Interactive Whiteboard and record the patterns.

During my placement at Lysterfield Primary School I was involved in the implementation of Investigations (play-based learning) with three Prep classes. Each time the students had Investigations a Photographer was chosen as well as a Reporter. The photographer would take photos of the students involved in the different experiences and areas around the room. The photographer chose a select number of photographs to present and discuss with the class.
I have also used photographs taken during a visit from Melbourne Water and a science experiment in a Grade 1 classroom at Thomas Mitchell Primary School. The students then used these photographs as visual aids and writing prompts during follow up activities. |
